How to Redact Names in a PDF

Use keyword rules for known names and structured patterns for common name fields, then verify before release.

Important: PermanentRedaction permanently removes text from text-based PDFs. Scanned/image-only PDFs are not supported.
Quick notes
Tip: Many PDF editors can only mask text with black rectangles. Masking is not the same as permanently deleting text from the PDF layer.

Step-by-step

Step 1
Add keyword rules for known names you must remove.
Step 2
For forms, add keywords for labels (e.g., “Name:”) and verify how the value is stored in the PDF text layer.
Step 3
Preview and confirm you are capturing all occurrences (including headers/footers).
Step 4
Export the final PDF and verify by searching for the names in the exported file.

Common mistakes to avoid

Relying on “visual” checks only
Always run search/copy tests against the exported PDF.
Missing alternate spellings
If names appear with variations, add explicit rules for each variation you see.
