Why Black-Box Redaction Fails
If text remains in the PDF layer, it may still be searchable or extractable. Permanent redaction removes the text from the exported PDF.
Important: PermanentRedaction permanently removes text from text-based PDFs. Scanned/image-only PDFs are not supported.
Quick notes
Tip: Many PDF editors can only mask text with black rectangles. Masking is not the same as permanently deleting text from the PDF layer.
Step-by-step
Step 1
Understand the difference between masking (overlay) and removal (deleting text from the PDF).
Step 2
Assume any masked text may still be extractable unless proven otherwise.
Step 3
Use deterministic redaction that permanently removes selected text, then export.
Step 4
Verify the exported PDF with search/copy tests and a verification report.
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming “it looks redacted” is enough
Visual appearance is not proof. Always test the exported PDF.
FAQ
Is masking ever acceptable?
Some workflows allow masking, but it is higher risk. Permanent removal is safer when confidentiality matters.
